The resin needs to be regenerated periodically by flushing it with sodium hydroxide solution. This releases the fluoride ions to waste and restores the resin’s capacity to adsorb more fluoride. The optimal pH level for the resin to work effectively is 5.2.

Reverse osmosis system also uses a membrane that filters out total dissolved matter from the water. The membrane allows only pure water molecules to pass through, while rejecting other substances like salts, minerals, metals, and organic compounds. The membrane produces two streams of water: permeate (pure water) and concentrate (waste water).

• Clean water tank: The permeate is stored in a clean water tank for use or bottling.
